Black figs Grown by José Maria Agusti at Lleida, Spain

About

Our organic figs are grown by José Maria Agusti, ripening in the Spanish sun near Barcelona. He grows a number of different varieties; these classic black Cuello de Dama Negra are a fragrant, jammy delicacy.

Perfectly ripe figs are squishy, sticky and very sweet. Many supermarket figs are picked when under-ripe for ease of transportation, leaving them firm and less flavoursome. José picks his figs as close to full ripeness as possible; the outstanding taste is worth the extra effort. They’re delivered soft and ready to eat, so tuck in right away.

If eating raw, take them out of the fridge about 30 mins beforehand. They reveal their flavour and perfume a lot better at room temperature.

How to prepare

Figs are totally moreish! They're great cut into wedges and added to salads, or stuffed with ricotta and wrapped in air-dried ham before roasting until soft and the ham crispy.

Or start the day right with quarters of fragrant fig, yoghurt and granola. Or bake for 10 mins with honey, lemon and cinnamon – all that’s needed to complete a great speedy dessert is a dollop of thick yoghurt, mascarpone or ricotta.

Storage

We’ll deliver them ripe and ready to eat. Store in the fridge and eat with 2-3 days.

Grown by José Maria Agusti, Lleida, Spain

José Maria Agusti grows our sweet, jammy organic figs on his farm in the province of Lleida, near Barcelona. Figs are in his blood: the oldest trees were planted by his grandfather, and José has been helping to harvest the ripe fruits since he was ten years old.
